Faced with systems and processes that no longer kept up with the demand placed on them, the Town of Salem, NH, enlisted the services of VUEWorks, Inc, to work with their roadway and utility engineers to implement a GIS based Infrastructure Asset Management and CMMS system. Designed to manage the Town’s roads, sidewalks, wastewater, water, drainage, signs, and other assets the Town affectionately calls the system “SamIAM”. The system, born from collaboration between the Town, its engineers, and VUEWorks, Inc., provides an Infrastructure Asset Management tool that can be used to:
- Maintain the inventory of roads, sidewalks, wastewater, water, drainage, signs, etc)
- Maintain GIS attribute data
- Link electronic documents
- Link external data
- Track service calls
- Plan and track work activity
- Capture condition information
- Asset valuation per GASB-34
- Optimize capital budgets
The SamIAM System builds on the Town’s investments in its Geographic Information System (GIS), Global Positioning System (GPS), pavement management software, and computers in a manner that integrates them with the Town’s budgetary process. The result is a system that provides data to support and rationalize decisions made regarding Town infrastructure asset needs. With proper implementation and maintenance of the SamIAM System, the Town is realizing a return on its investment through:
- Better decision making on operations and maintenance and capital improvements necessary to maintain or enhance level of service,
- More effective spending of available operational and capital funds, and
- Ready access to and ease of retrieval of asset data and record information.
